A red card to Brumbies replacement hooker Josh Mann-Rea for a punch on Stormers substitute prop Oli Kebble in the 64th minute proved crucial in the end as it allowed the Cape side to stretch the lead back to eight points through flyhalf Kurt Coleman’s fourth penalty on the night.
With the score at 19-11 and a man down, it was going to be difficult for the Brumbies to come back into the contest, and the Stormers took full advantage as they started carrying the ball with vigour after kicking for most of the match.
They had to wait until two minutes before the finish to reap the rewards, though, when right wing Dillyn Leyds jumped through Joe Tomane’s tackle in the right-hand corner, and TMO Marius Jonker was happy with the grounding and awarded the try.
Robbie Fleck’s team wasn’t done yet, though, as a sweeping move saw the Stormers work their way back into the red zone and tighthead substitute Vincent Koch crashed over to seal a vital victory after the defeat to the Sharks last week.
After leading 9-5 at halftime, the Stormers stuck to their gameplan of looking for territory and denying the Brumbies any attacking opportunity inside their half, although they overdid the kicking as a number of Stormers chances were wasted through poor decision-making with the boot.
But eventually they decided to hold on to the ball, and it paid off in the first quarter of the second half as a number of players carried and maintained excellent continuity before Man-of-the-Match Siya Kolisi forced his way over.
Coleman also had a good day with the boot as he slotted four penalties and a conversion for a 14-point haul.
